RotoNest

Nesting sidetable concept

Brief

Design a piece of furniture that highlights and uses a wood veneer by Tabu in a unique way.

Inspiration

Simple curvatures, dark wood tones, overlapping layers

Initial Ideation

Top views of table with nested rotating tables, pivoting to create various shapes

Prototyping

Testing various rotating configurations. Eliminated this idea because the base would need to be quite large to support the weight of the extended tables.

Removable Nesting Table Concept

Moved on to a nested table concept, testing spacing and size. Circular in shape, the tables can rotate in place when nested.

Scale Model

Used laser cut pieces to construct a precise and functional frame for the scale model, veneer layered on outside.

RotoNest

Rotate nested tables to adjust aesthetics

Use Cycle

Spin inner tables to desired position, tables sit within the grooves

Can lift tables out of the grooves built into the bases

Lift tables out with ease to reposition

Enjoy 3 separate tables as needed for different living set ups

Scale model process

A fun little compilation of the making of the scale model

WHAT I LEARNED

This project was completed during a COVID semester which created some challenges in accessing the wood-shop and added the constraint of not being able to create a full scale model. It led to me pivoting to doing more cardboard models and having a lot of my pieces laser cut which was an interesting assembly process.

WHAT NEXT?

While the scale model makes for some great plant stands, I would love to make a full scale model to test the use cycle with under the strain of full weight. I have a hunch Iā€™d have to add a mechanism to the rotating pieces, but given how smoothly it works at a small scale, I have confidence it will still work at the larger scale.
